Who's Online

None

The cost of adding a feature isn't just the time it takes to code it. The cost also includes the addition of an obstacle to future expansion.

There is a serious bug in Joomla 1.5 (all releases to date).

When you use the back-end to change a template's parameters, Joomla changes the permission settings of the template's .ini file from 644 (correct) to 555 (wrong).

Joomla's developers actually intended this!  Apparently, each time you edit your template's settings, they wanted Joomla to fix the .ini file's broken permission settings, then change the template parameters, and then wreck the .ini file's permissions again.

Since it is often faster to edit and upload a changed .ini file directly, the broken permissions do matter, even if all that were getting changed by Joomla were the .ini files.

However, depending on your template and your server environment, Joomla fails to fix or wreck the permissions of the .ini file properly.  Worse, Joomla might also mess up the permissions of the template's css file (which screws up the site's front end).  And on rare occasions it trashes the permissions of every directory and file in the template's directory (sometimes changing everything to 000)!

In general, directories should remain 755 and files should be 644.

We have put into our downloads section a file to replace the standard Joomla 1.5.9
/administrator/components/com_template/controller.php
file.

That thread also shows what to hack, in case you want to apply the changes yourself.
